Mashed potatoes are one of the most commonly requested sides in our household. Therefore, it would be silly to not share a post on how we prepare this easy side. Mashed potatoes, with their creamy texture and comforting flavor, have secured a cherished spot on dinner tables around the world. In this post, we explain the the perfect batch of creamy mashed potatoes, appreciating the simplicity and satisfaction they bring to any meal.
The Foundation: Choosing the Right Potatoes
Every recipe begins with quality ingredients, and mashed potatoes are no exception. When it comes to selecting the perfect potatoes, opt for varieties with a high starch content such as russets or Yukon Golds. These potatoes have a fluffy texture when cooked, ideal for achieving that creamy consistency we crave. Avoid waxy potatoes like red potatoes, as they tend to result in a gluey mash. Disclaimer: I used a few red potatoes in this recipe because i was out of Yukon golds (our preferred choice) but they still turned out good just a little sticky.
Mashing Method: Embrace the Tools of the Trade
The mashing method you choose can make all the difference in the final outcome of your mashed potatoes. While a potato masher is a classic choice, consider using a potato ricer for an ultra-smooth texture. For those who prefer a rustic feel, a hand mixer or even a fork can be used to achieve a slightly chunkier mash. Whichever method you choose, be mindful not to overmix, as this can lead to gummy potatoes.
